It’s Christmas Day for the rotten year of 2020, so hopefully everyone is able to enjoy a silver lining as we approach the new year. For me, I decided to take a look at the much-touted “birthday bonuses” in SNK’s Art of Fighting 3.
If the internal date of the MVS machine is set to a date that matches the birthdate of a character in Art of Fighting 3, the title screen announces the birthday and that character receives a “special day” bonus. The bonus essentially puts the character into a permanent desperation mode, similar to when the player is low on health. The character flashes orange and receives a 20% damage bonus. However, it does not let the character do their desperation/ultimate KO super moves at any time.
Robert Garcia’s birthday is easy to remember – Dec. 25, or Christmas Day! I made a short video that highlights Robert in Art of Fighting 3 and the edge he gets with the damage bonus.
Coincidentally enough, I’ve seen on Twitter that Dec. 25 is also the birthday of both Billy Kane and Eiji Kisaragi. What a popular birthday in the SNK fighting game universe!
